Istanbul (Not Constantinople)

I played a version of this on last week’s show by
the Heebee-Jeebees, a Calgary based a cappella
group that has glorious harmonies.
This is by They Might Be Giants, an obscure
garage band that that gets the occasional gig
performing at Jiffy Lube openings and Home
Depot power tool demonstration events.
I kid…I’m a kidder.
They do the occasional country fair as well.
Just ask the Turks, they’ll tell you…

The Bobs Interview

An absolute classic piece of workplace comedy.
The 1999 flick Office Space, directed and written
by Mike Judge, was a box office disappointment
but later became a significant cult film of epic
proportions.
I had considered not posting this gem because of
the current pandemic and it’s effect on our daily
occupational routine but we WILL eventually
return to normal, whatever that is, and this will
all seem seriously funny again.
It’s still a hoot, regardless of your situation.
Ron Livingston is top notch as Peter Gibbons, a
software company drone who longs for a better
job…he undergoes hypnotherapy to ease his
depression, achieving a state of bliss, but it
becomes permanent when his therapist dies during
one of his treatments.
This leads Peter to approach his job with lots more
honesty and hilarity ensues.
A real sleeper of a movie, much funnier that it has a
right to be…I had avoided it like the plague when it
first came out due to the disdain I had for Beavis and
Butthead, a Mike Judge creation that had been
irritating the airwaves for a few years previously.
That was a mistake on my part, where as B&B was
puerile nonsense this flick was superb satire of a
very high degree.
This scene has excellence written all over it…

Boxing with Mom

Bent Butt is a pretty talented Canadian stand-up comedian.
He’s an old school type of comic, laid back, not full of himself
and no snark to speak of.
He has a unique style, self deprecating with excellent timing
and a great flow.
He’s not for everyone but I appreciate his approach to the
craft and find myself playing him on the show to good reviews.
He’s funny, that’s all that counts.
Don’t mess with his mom…

Cannibal Buffet

Aurelio Voltaire with a lively piece about
the dangers of dining out when you don’t
practice social distancing.
No, not really, threw that in there because
it was topical, a really cheap tie-in actually.
I should be ashamed but I’m not.
Still, you’d do good to avoid the finger food…

Cannabilism

Hale and Pace with a funny piece on
survival of the fittest.
Or fattest, in this case.
It’s not even survival really, I have every
reason to believe there was a fast food
joint just over the hill.
Mr. Hale has his preferences.
Seems to like pudding…
