{"id":483,"date":"2013-07-06T23:14:56","date_gmt":"2013-07-07T04:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/comedy101radio.com\/?p=483"},"modified":"2013-07-06T23:14:56","modified_gmt":"2013-07-07T04:14:56","slug":"he-doesnt-seem-to-like-me-very-much","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/comedy101radio.com\/?p=483","title":{"rendered":"He doesn&#8217;t seem to like ME very much"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I do so love British comedy.<br \/>\nYou will hear\/see me say\/write that quite a lot on this site.<br \/>\nIt is the cream of the crop, the standard by which all other<br \/>\ncomedy should be measured by, in my humble opinion.<br \/>\nNot to say that humor on this side of the pond is rubbish.<br \/>\nA lot of it certainly is, but not all.<br \/>\nOne of the main reasons that I embrace it as much as I do is<br \/>\nthat it has a much higher intellectual component to it.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s smarter, more cerebral and doesn&#8217;t talk down to its fan base.<br \/>\nIt is one of the main reasons that Monty Python could produce all those<br \/>\nsketches without the use of a punchline and still make them funny.<br \/>\nI have always said that the smarter the comic, the bigger the laughs.<br \/>\nSome classic examples of that are Bill Hicks, Jeff Caldwell, Emo Philips,<br \/>\nand Jake Johannsen.<br \/>\nYes, those are American comics, and one might think that it would detract<br \/>\na bit from my point.<br \/>\nExcept that Bill Hicks was a god like figure over there, sold out all his shows<br \/>\nand had a fan base second to none.<br \/>\nI attended the very first Bill Hicks tribute at the Montreal Comedy Festival<br \/>\nback in the nineties, it was soon after he had passed away and the powers<br \/>\nthat be eulogized him with a superb get together, celebrities from all<br \/>\nwalks of life&#8230;all fans of Bill when he was alive.<br \/>\nI was the only comedy show host allowed to record the event, directly from the<br \/>\nmain sound board I might add, and I felt honored.<br \/>\nI saw videos that he did over there, at the peak of his fame, and they were<br \/>\nsome of the funniest pieces that I have ever seen!<br \/>\nVery smart material, and his audience really appreciated it.<br \/>\nEmo is also a revered figure in England, doing many shows to packed houses.<br \/>\nI remember buying a British comedy album in Canada that was a benefit recording for<br \/>\nAmnesty International.<br \/>\nEmo was on it and the material was hilarious, my opinion and the audiences, judging<br \/>\nby the heavy applause.<br \/>\nMy point is, the smarter American comics are held in high esteem over there.<br \/>\nAll smart comics are, regardless of where they are from.<br \/>\nI could go on and on, instead I will give you an example of what I think is<br \/>\nsmart, well thought out humor.<br \/>\nThis is Not the 9:00 News from the early eighties, starring a much younger<br \/>\nRowan Atkinson, Pamela Stephenson and Mel Smith.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pOMQLhf7N4Q\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Did you happen to notice which finger Rowan had bandaged?<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s just waving that puppy around&#8230;Priceless! <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I do so love British comedy.
