The backstory…
SCTV was a Canadian made television comedy show that became
successful, began airing in the states and to fulfill a rather
odd rule that at least a couple of minutes were to be devoted
to Canadian content, kinda forced into winging it and created
the two fake brother known as Bob and Doug McKenzie.
Essentially the rule was received poorly by Rick Moranis and
Dave Thomas, and they thought to use the opportunity to mock
the situation by portraying a couple of simpletons on the show.
Stereotypes that would be somewhat ridiculed, but things didn’t
turn out that way, much to their surprise it would become the
most popular part of the program.
Some of it was very funny, so much so that it spun off a movie,
which wasn’t half bad, and lots of merchandise to sell to folks
who like that sort of thing.
